January 24 marks the United Nations International Day of Education, a global reminder of the vital role education plays in peace and development. On this day, we celebrate Amma—Mata Amritanandamayi Devi—a spiritual leader and humanitarian whose life’s work has uplifted countless lives through education, especially among the world’s most vulnerable populations.
Amma teaches that by strengthening the people at the base of the pyramid, the entire edifice of society becomes stable, healthy, and strong.
A Legacy Rooted in Love and Learning
Though Amma’s own formal education ended at age 9—when she had to care for her family in a poor fishing village—her love for learning and helping others never stopped. Even as a child, she tutored students in her village. Over the decades, she transformed that early passion into an international movement for accessible and compassionate education.
Her initiatives have supported:
- Schooling for children orphaned by disasters
- Adult literacy programs for women in rural areas
- Scholarships and vocational training
- Research and higher education focused on compassion and sustainability
A Global Education Network
Amma is also the Chancellor of a globally acclaimed university, which partners with over 150 top institutions around the world. These collaborations promote compassion-driven research, sustainable development, and social upliftment, ensuring her mission continues to evolve and expand.
Be Part of the Change
On this International Day of Education, let’s reflect on how each of us can help build a more inclusive and empowered future. Supporting education is one of the most powerful ways to break cycles of poverty and injustice.
